"FREEDOM IS A CHOICE - Introducing the Great American Oil Embargo: WHERE TO BUY GASOLINE AND NOT SUPPORT TERRORISM... Yisrael Medad of the Begin Center sent the following information.
Every time you fill up the car, you can avoid putting more money into the coffers of Saudi Arabia.
Just buy from gas companies that don't import their oil from the Saudis.
Nothing is more frustrating than the feeling that every time I fill-up the tank, I am sending my money to people who are trying to kill me, my family, and my friends. I thought it might be interesting for you to know which oil companies are the best to buy gas from. Major companies that import Middle Eastern oil (for the period 9/1/00 -8/31/01).
Shell . . . . . . . . . . . 205,742,000 barrels
Chevron/Texaco . . . 144,332,000 barrels
Exxon/Mobil . . . . . 130,082,000 barrels
Marathon . . . . . . . . 117,740,000 barrels
Amoco . . . . . . . . . . .62,231,000 barrels
If you do the math at $30/barrel, these imports amount to over $18 BILLION! Here are some large companies that do not import Middle Eastern oil:
Citgo . . . . . . . . 0 barrels
Sunoco . . . . . . 0 barrels
Conoco . . . . . . 0 barrels
Sinclair . . . . . . 0 barrels
BP/Phillips . . . .0 barrels
All of this information is NOT available from the Department of Energy nor is it documented. This is another urban legend form of chain letter that has been making the rounds in different manifestations since the late nineties. This particular variation was posted at
- RuminateThis
. If you sincerely do wish to patronize major American companies who do not import from the Middle East, you are limited to only two of the names mentioned on the list above: Sunoco and Sinclair. Happy motoring and blogging and always check your sources!

Howdy Cowboy Kahlil! I intend to keep both of them up to date more or less. The eclectic high anxiety blog is far less focussed and a lot more amusing than the Elegant blog which is where I'm just projecting another average disenchanted disgruntled American's voice in critical times. In time though, you'll find that most of my links shall be migrating over to the Daily Links feature under the posts at the Heightened Anxiety blog, so they will all be archived or hyperlinked within the posts themselves for posterity and for users' own research purposes. I discovered early on that having a links section as the Elegant blog has can rapidly become unwieldly and slow down that page loading significantly. So, I'll be about for the long haul and I'm NOT under any delusions that things shall magically be alright again if and when there's ever a Democratic administration either. I'll criticize any political legislation that isn't really for the better interests of Joe Six Packs, surmising that it's actually us - the multitude and majority who are 'the unwashed' working taxpayers - who should damn well be getting fair representation from our public officers above ALL other vested interests.

WHO WOULD JESUS BOMB? Mr. Bush ended his State of Confusion address with:
"We Americans have faith in ourselves but not in ourselves alone. We do not claim to know all the ways of Providence, yet we can trust in them, placing our confidence in the loving God behind all of life and all of history. May He guide us now..."

Now for the guidance: What were the last word's of Jesus just before he was taken away by religious fanatics, tortured and murdered?

Bush Gets Resistance on Medicare Plan in Grand Rapids, Michigan. "Protesters thronged the streets of Grand Rapids, most of them demonstrating against possible war. There were hundreds outside the hospital where he visited with health care workers and a Medicare beneficiary behind closed doors, and hundreds more at several other intersections. They lined virtually the entire route from the hospital to the site of Bush's speech. A State of Disarray: George Bush touched on all his favorite themes - war and tax cuts -
"... in his hour-long speech last night. But as Will Saletan notes, he did not mention the actual state of the union: "It was the kind of speech a president gives when he's been in office two weeks, not two years." Why talk about the plummeting economy, when you can ramble on about Big Bad Saddam? Saletan writes, "What Bush said of Saddam's disarmament record could equally be said of Bush's domestic record. He has given no evidence of progress. He must have much to hide."

But the pundits are unanimous on one point: there is no doubt Dubya's going to war. But you didn't have to tune into the State of the Union tirade to know that."

After watching the 'speech' (it was more like a pro-war joint-session pep rally where Bush gets his cheerleader's megaphone out of dustballs), I came to the
following conclusions:

  • Bush is concerned about researching hydrogen power about as much as Lee
    Raymond
    is.

  • You could find everything in the Iraq-related section of the state of confusion 2003 speech right here months ago. Loooonnnngggg before the U.N. inspections even began, in case you suspected already that the Bush the Dense regime had their agenda prepared well in advance...

  • Bush has serious vocabulary issues.

  • Congress is going to require some serious hand lotion for all that applauding after EVERY GODDAMN SENTENCE as if it were all brand new inspiring ideas.

  • Bush looks really ugly on TV....I mean, really ugly. Why doesn't he grow a moustache and fire a shotgun into the air once in a while like his rival unelected despot does?

Basically put, the state of confusion address was predictable, uninteresting, unimaginative, and it contained numerous outright lies (and that's an understatement). Although Bush's lies have all been thoroughly dismissed already, he continues to reiterate them exclusively for the sake of those who are already basking in the certitude provided by the constant repetition of the mainstream media. A one-trick pony. You didn't really expect anything different after watching this, did you?

Seriously, if Bush really did have evidence that Iraq still has weapons, we would have seen it by now. Bush has been unwilling to show us the money. Period. Also, if you really believe that Saddam is eager to play hide and seek games with a country that can toast his entire country into a sheet of green glittering glass particles a thousand times over, then you should fit in just smugly right here.

'If your goal is regime change, you must be much more careful with your language because of the potential backlash,' said the memo, titled Talking About Iraq. It added: 'You do not want Americans to believe that the war on Iraq is being waged to protect Israel rather than to protect America.' In particular, the memo urged Israelis to pipe down about the possibility of Israel responding to an Iraqi attack. 'Such certainty may be Israeli policy, but asserting it publicly and so overtly will not sit well with a majority of Americans because it suggests a pre-determined outcome rather than a measured approach,' it said."

If you're Saddam Hussein, and the US storms your soil - it's over for you. Might as well take away all that American incentive for seizing your resources. In recent weeks, the administration has been floating that possibility around, too. They've been preparing us and the world for what would amount to a massive assault on the global atmosphere. According to the New York Times , plans are in the works to amass the firefighting power to put out their burn, so we can then assume control of their resources:

A Pentagon spokesman, Lt. Dan Heplage, declined to comment on any contact with oil firefighting companies, saying the Defense Department did not discuss contingency plans or talks with private companies unless a contract is signed. "But it is part of our job to be ready for different situations," he added.

The Bush administration says that restoring Iraq's oil production is paramount to the United States' long-term interests in the country and the Middle East. Revenue from oil exports would be crucial to reviving the economy if Mr. Hussein is ousted, and a healthy economy, in turn, would shore up political stability. So if Iraq's oil industry were damaged — a possibility very much on the minds of American military planners — companies that battle fires would need to get to the fields fast to limit the destruction.

IMMEDIATE ATTENTION NEEDED :
HIGHLY CONFIDENTIAL

FROM: GEORGE WALKER BUSH

FAX: 202.456.2461

DEAR SIR / MADAM,

I AM GEORGE WALKER BUSH, SON OF THE FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA GEORGE HERBERT WALKER BUSH, AND CURRENTLY SERVING AS PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. THIS LETTER MIGHT SURPRISE YOU BECAUSE WE HAVE NOT MET NEITHER IN PERSON NOR BY CORRESPONDENCE. I CAME TO KNOW OF YOU IN MY SEARCH FOR A RELIABLE AND REPUTABLE PERSON TO HANDLE A VERY CONFIDENTIAL BUSINESS TRANSACTION, WHICH INVOLVES THE TRANSFER OF A HUGE SUM OF MONEY TO AN ACCOUNT REQUIRING MAXIMUM CONFIDENCE.

I AM WRITING YOU IN ABSOLUTE CONFIDENCE PRIMARILY TO SEEK YOUR ASSISTANCE IN ACQUIRING OIL FUNDS THAT ARE PRESENTLY TRAPPED IN THE REPUBLIC OF IRAQ. MY PARTNERS AND I SOLICIT YOUR ASSISTANCE IN COMPLETING A TRANSACTION BEGUN BY MY FATHER, WHO HAS LONG BEEN ACTIVELY ENGAGED IN THE EXTRACTION OF PETROLEUM IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND BRAVELY SERVED HIS COUNTRY AS DIRECTOR OF THE UNITED STATES CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY.

IN THE DECADE OF THE NINETEEN-EIGHTIES, MY FATHER, THEN VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, SOUGHT TO WORK WITH THE GOOD OFFICES OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF IRAQ TO REGAIN LOST OIL REVENUE SOURCES IN THE NEIGHBORING ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF IRAN. THIS UNSUCCESSFUL VENTURE WAS SOON FOLLOWED BY A FALLING OUT WITH HIS IRAQI PARTNER, WHO SOUGHT TO ACQUIRE ADDITIONAL OIL REVENUE SOURCES IN THE NEIGHBORING EMIRATE OF KUWAIT, A WHOLLY-OWNED U.S.-BRITISH SUBSIDIARY.

MY FATHER RE-SECURED THE PETROLEUM ASSETS OF KUWAIT IN 1991 AT A COST OF SIXTY-ONE BILLION U.S. DOLLARS ($61,000,000,000). OUT OF THAT COST, THIRTY-SIX BILLION DOLLARS ($36,000,000,000) WERE SUPPLIED BY HIS PARTNERS IN THE KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA AND OTHER PERSIAN GULF MONARCHIES, AND SIXTEEN BILLION DOLLARS ($16,000,000,000) BY GERMAN AND JAPANESE PARTNERS. BUT MY FATHER'S FORMER IRAQI BUSINESS PARTNER REMAINED IN CONTROL OF THE REPUBLIC OF IRAQ AND ITS PETROLEUM RESERVES.

MY FAMILY IS CALLING FOR YOUR URGENT ASSISTANCE IN FUNDING THE REMOVAL OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF IRAQ AND ACQUIRING THE PETROLEUM ASSETS OF HIS COUNTRY, AS COMPENSATION FOR THE COSTS OF REMOVING HIM FROM POWER. UNFORTUNATELY, OUR PARTNERS FROM 1991 ARE NOT WILLING TO SHOULDER THE BURDEN OF THIS NEW VENTURE, WHICH IN ITS UPCOMING PHASE MAY COST THE SUM OF 100 BILLION TO 200 BILLION DOLLARS ($100,000,000,000 - $200,000,000,000), BOTH IN THE INITIAL ACQUISITION AND IN LONG-TERM MANAGEMENT.

WITHOUT THE FUNDS FROM OUR 1991 PARTNERS, WE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO ACQUIRE THE OIL REVENUE TRAPPED WITHIN IRAQ. THAT IS WHY MY FAMILY AND OUR COLLEAGUES ARE URGENTLY SEEKING YOUR GRACIOUS ASSISTANCE. OUR DISTINGUISHED COLLEAGUES IN THIS BUSINESS TRANSACTION INCLUDE THE SITTING VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, RICHARD CHENEY, WHO IS AN ORIGINAL PARTNER IN THE IRAQ VENTURE AND FORMER HEAD OF THE HALLIBURTON OIL COMPANY, AND CONDOLEEZA RICE, WHOSE PROFESSIONAL DEDICATION TO THE VENTURE WAS DEMONSTRATED IN THE NAMING OF A CHEVRON OIL TANKER AFTER HER.

I WOULD BESEECH YOU TO TRANSFER A SUM EQUALING TEN TO TWENTY-FIVE PERCENT (10-25 %) OF YOUR YEARLY INCOME TO OUR ACCOUNT TO AID IN THIS IMPORTANT VENTURE. THE INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WILL FUNCTION AS OUR TRUSTED INTERMEDIARY. I PROPOSE THAT YOU MAKE THIS TRANSFER BEFORE THE FIFTEENTH (15TH) OF THE MONTH OF APRIL.

I KNOW THAT A TRANSACTION OF THIS MAGNITUDE WOULD MAKE ANYONE APPREHENSIVE AND WORRIED. BUT I AM ASSURING YOU THAT ALL WILL BE WELL AT THE END OF THE DAY. A BOLD STEP TAKEN SHALL NOT BE REGRETTED, I ASSURE YOU. PLEASE DO BE INFORMED THAT THIS BUSINESS TRANSACTION IS 100% LEGAL. IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO CO-OPERATE IN THIS TRANSACTION, PLEASE CONTACT OUR INTERMEDIARY REPRESENTATIVES TO FURTHER DISCUSS THE MATTER.

I PRAY THAT YOU UNDERSTAND OUR PLIGHT. MY FAMILY AND OUR COLLEAGUES WILL BE FOREVER GRATEFUL. PLEASE REPLY IN STRICT CONFIDENCE TO THE CONTACT NUMBERS BELOW.

SINCERELY WITH WARM REGARDS,

GEORGE WALKER BUSH

Fear and Learning in America by Robert Fisk

Israeli Helicopters Fire Missiles in Gaza

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Israeli attack helicopters fired 11 missiles at Gaza City early Friday, hitting a hospital chapel and several metal workshops. Islamic militants retaliated by firing three crude rockets at an Israeli desert town. In the West Bank on Friday, troops killed a Palestinian mother and her son in unclear circumstances. An army spokesman said one of them fired on an army outpost with a handgun and both were found to be carrying hand grenades. Neighbors said the mother and son set out along a dirt path to avoid a military checkpoint on their way into Nablus to buy groceries. Some spoke about the woman's grief and desire to avenge the killing of one of her other sons, a militant member of Islamic Jihad, by Israeli forces two months ago.

The missile attack on Gaza was launched hours after Palestinian gunmen killed three Israeli soldiers in a West Bank ambush. The latest flareup came just five days before Israel's general election, which is expected to give hardline Prime Minister Ariel Sharon another term. One missile hit a 19th century Anglican chapel in the Ahli Hospital compound, punching holes in the roof and the stone floor near the altar and covering an icon of the Virgin Mary with debris. "This is an act of terrorism against our church," said Anglican Church Bishop Riah Abu Assal. "Its location next to the hospital is well known. There is no room for mistakes, and they (Israeli military officials) didn't even bother to issue a statement to express their regret." The military had no comment on the damage to the chapel, but said the workshops were targeted because they made weapons. Palestinians said six people were wounded, though none of the 40 patients at the hospital were harmed.

There's a slideshow feature on this link with nearly 500 graphic images of what atrocities actually look like for the uninitiated.

Ariel Sharon gets his funding once again from America's least wealthy taxpayers. The administration has set up two "working groups" to examine Israel's request for $4 billion in additional military assistance and $8 billion in U.S.-backed loan guarantees. The proceeds would be spread out over the next three years. A deal could be reached as early as next month, although U.S. officials were cautious about the timing.

Israel, battered by the global economic slowdown and a two-year-old Palestinian uprising for independence, has already agreed to a provision meant to ensure the funds are not spent on settlement activities. Israel is already the top recipient of U.S. foreign aid, receiving close to $3 billion in mostly military assistance each year. A new aid package would come on top of existing U.S. commitments. This announcement also comes within days of the Israeli election, uncoincidentally enough. Funding falls under Bush's "Leave No Palestinian or Iraqi Child Alive" educational initiative package. The Bush administration is close to completing separate economic aid packages for other glorious U.S. allies: fundamentalist Islamic Turkey and undemocratic monarchy Jordan, congressional sources said. Wait a go, George. Americans certainly don't wish to see Palestinian independence, do we? Well, you don't anyways.

Democrats on the House Appropriations Committee recently released an issue-by-issue analysis of where the nation stands today based on major social and economic indices. Excerpts from that report follow. The President is scheduled to give his State of the Union speech next week. "Readily fooled by a politician as relentlessly disingenuous as Bush, the browsing herd of Moron-Americans won’t blame themselves should things go terribly wrong. They’ll simply stampede in the opposite direction."

"The Iraqis worked hard to convince the MP that they are the victims in the latest confrontation. She needed little convincing. "I don't believe Canadians want a war on children and that's what this would be. Forty-six per cent of Iraqis are under 16. This would be war on children," she said.

It's been 17 years since Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist introduced his daughter at his confirmation hearings as Chief Justice. Now, Janet Rehnquist is herself a powerful - and controversial - figure. In her brief tenure as Inspector General of Health and Human Services she's been accused of influencing investigations for political reasons, using her office for personal gain and leading a bloodletting of senior staffers who disagreed with her methods. She's now the target of three federal investigations. There have been about 20 major staff changes since Rehnquist came aboard. All six of her deputies have resigned or been forced out. Many of them spoke to CBS News, but said they felt too intimidated to appear on camera.

Bush picks Jerry Thacker who calls AIDS the ‘gay plague,’ to serve on the Presidential Advisory Commission on HIV & AIDS.
Thacker’s Scepter Institute’s live presentations, including ‘Help for Homosexuals’ with tips on how to convert ‘those practicing this deathstyle.’
Jan. 23, 2003: White House press secretary Ari the Truth Stretcher Fleischer, while neither confirming nor denying the withdrawal, issued a stern rebuke of Thacker's statements. "The views that he holds are far, far removed from what the president believes," Fleischer said. "The president has a total opposite view. ... The president's view is that people with AIDS need to be treated with care, compassion."
LOL. Airy, you're a professional liar. Your salary is being paid by taxpayers so that you may continuously lie to them as the illegitimate Bush administration's bovinefecesperson.

"The administration's choice of the Pennsylvania publisher and marketing consultant had come under severe criticism from gay rights groups and others. Thacker is a former Bob Jones University staffer who contracted the AIDS virus after his wife was infected by a blood transfusion. The Washington Post reported Thursday that on his Web site and elsewhere, Thacker has called homosexuality a "death-style" rather than a lifestyle and said that "Christ can rescue the homosexual." The newspaper also said that after word of his appointment was leaked in recent days, some controversial material disappeared from Thacker's Web site. The Post said earlier versions referring to the "gay plague," for example, were changed to simply "plague."

Gay activists applauded the news that Thacker would not join the panel but said Bush administration AIDS policies still fall far short. "While this is a positive development, the underlying problem continues to remain with this administration's approach to HIV and AIDS," said David Smith of the Human Rights Campaign, a leading gay rights advocacy group. "They're obsessive focus on abstinence as the solitary mechanism to prevent the transmission of HIV is not based in sound science. They continue to come from an ideological perspective as opposed to a scientific perspective."

Take note, Ari the Truth Stretcher: "Like the Bush administration, Thacker promotes abstinence from sex as the way to prevent HIV infection. "For the unmarried, the only truly 'safe sex' is not to have sex," Thacker has written. He describes himself as an activist in the Christian community. Thacker gave two speeches at Bob Jones University - what a travesty to call this institution of primitive superstitious ignorant magical beliefs 'a university' - in September 2001, which focused, according to the school's Web site, on the "sin of homosexuality" and his family's struggle with AIDS. "When he and his wife discovered in 1986 that they had contracted HIV, the most horrible thought was that it was a disease connected with the sin of homosexuality," according to the Web site's summary. "They didn't want anyone to think they were homosexual because they knew what the Bible said about homosexuality."

The 35-member presidential commission, which was created during the Reagan administration, makes recommendations to the White House on AIDS policy. It has been harshly critical in the past of the government's response to AIDS. The panel's co-chairs professed to know little about Thacker. Co-chair Tom Coburn said he didn't know much about Thacker except that he is infected with the AIDS virus. He said Thacker's views on homosexuality were irrelevant to the panel's work. Co-chair Louis W. Sullivan, HHS secretary under the first President Bush, said he only recently became aware of "the Thacker controversy" and wanted to talk to him before he was sworn in.

"Why We Know Iraq Is Lying" By CONDOLEEZZA RICE

Watch for the sequel: "We Promised You Evidence But These Rhetorical Arguments Pretty Much Convince Most Of You Dolts That Only Iraq Is Lying"

Wealth and Our Commonwealth is the quintessential “Man Bites Dog” story of over 1,000 high-net-worth individuals who rose up to protest the repeal of the estate tax and in the process made headlines everywhere last year. Central to the organization of what Newsweek tagged the “billionaire backlash” were two visionaries: Bill Gates, Sr., co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the largest foundation on earth, and Chuck Collins, cofounder of United for a Fair Economy and of Responsible Wealth, and a national expert on economic inequality.

Gates and Collins argue that individual wealth is a product not only of hard work and smart choices but of the society that provides the fertile soil for success. They don’t subscribe to the “Great Man” theory of wealth creation but contend that society’s investments, such as economic development, education, health care, and property rights protection, all contribute to any individual’s good fortune. With the estate tax repeal proposed by the Bush administration, we might be facing the future that Teddy Roosevelt feared-where huge fortunes amassed and untaxed would evolve into a dangerous and permanent aristocracy. Repeal would drop federal revenues $850 billion in the decade after repeal, not to mention that the U.S. Treasury estimates that charitable contributions would drop by $6 billion a year.

But what about all those modest families that would lose the farm? Gates and Collins expose the fallacy of this argument, pointing out that this is largely a myth and that the very same lobbies and politicians who are crying “cows” have opposed other legislation that would actually have helped small farmers. Weaving in personal narratives, history, and plenty of solid economic sense, Gates and Collins make a sound and compelling case for estate tax reform, not repeal.

George W. Bush: You Were Expecting John Galt?

"That Dude's Crazy!

Sometimes I find myself riding the NYC subway very late at night, long after all the respectable people have donned their smoking jackets and finished their last sherry of the evening (or whatever it is that respectable people do before bed these days). There, in the maniac-infused pre-dawn hours, I will sometimes find myself in a Threatening Situation.

I know how to handle these situations, when raving lunatics roam the cars looking for confrontations whilst conducting one-sided arguments with ancient childhood toys that may or may not be buried somewhere in their pockets. Sometimes the right strategy is to Mind My Own Business, head down, nose buried in a newspaper. And sometimes the best ploy is a little number I call "Crazier Than Thou."

This is an entertaining one. Generations of schoolboys have learned it as a playground survival technique. It involves not avoiding eye contact. Rather, my goal while playing "Crazier Than Thou" is to affect a wild-eyed, unaccountably smiling demeanor that even certified lunatics recognize as Dangerously Insane. They can see in my eyes a look that tells them that I will gladly demonstrate that I can be more randomly, violently unbalanced than they could ever dream of, and that I'd enjoy every second of it. This might sound implausible, but I'm an actor and it's always worked for me - "Crazier Than Thou," when deployed correctly, causes sociopathic, shambling maniacs to mutter darkly and strike out for the next subway car in the hopes of finding someone who'll show the proper respect towards a dangerous lunatic.

There's a point here, and the point is that routines like "Crazier Than Thou" are useful only in a one-on-one, late-night confrontation. I don't do it at dinner parties. Yes, there are crazy people at dinner parties. And yes, it might theoretically be desirable to make a certifiable and annoying dinner party guest avoid me, thinking, "I'm gonna go elswhere - that dude's crazy. He's capable of anything." But being a somewhat rational man, I realize that when I am at a party there are other people in the room - friends, colleagues, people with whom I will still be in touch long after the host's cousin's insane husband (for example) has faded from memory. In short, it's rarely to my advantage to make a large group of friends and colleagues believe that I am a raving lunatic, a loose cannon with no regard for generally accepted rules of conduct. It's a little bit of a social and professional handicap when the people in your life believe that you have utterly taken leave of your senses.

You're thinking that this is a fairly simple point, perhaps even ridiculously obvious. But it seems to be a point that the Bush administration has utterly failed to grasp.

Fans of the administration's Iraq policy will tell you that our approach is working on Saddam. By strutting around like a semiretarded pro wrestler ("I'm crazy! I'm nuts! I'll rip you apart! I won't wait for a coalition! I wanna go at it RIGHT NOW! Oooh - hold me back!!!"), the logic goes, Saddam has been intimidated into allowing inspections, and thus war might possibly be avoided.

Unfortunately for us all, the international community is much more like a dinner party than it is like a deserted subway car at dawn. When the world's only remaining superpower begins behaving like a ritalin-deprived Hulk Hogan, everyone at the party becomes understandably nervous. And if Saddam eventually makes an excuse and departs hastily, we won't be thought of as heroes - we'll be left with awkward silences, destabilized relationships, and a bunch of terrified and alienated ex-friends glancing at their watches and making sotto voce arrangements to get together another time, without the Crazy Guy."

This One's Good!
Another conflict of interest of heinous proportions!

According to Prince George's Journal , William H.T. (``Bucky") Bush, an uncle of George W. Bush, is on the Board of Directors of a company which will benefit substantially from war with Iraq, according to financial analysts. The company, Engineered Support Systems, is based in St. Louis. William H.T. Bush was also a major Bush donor and campaign fund-raiser. Astute business articles have boosted the company's stock this fall. As Russ Mitchell, writing in Smart Money, put it: ``War may not be healthy for children and other living things (not in the short run, anyway), but it's healthy for military stocks, right?

What you have now in the White House are the same felonious crew who lied under oath to Congress during the Iran-Contra hearings and were later pardoned by Gerald Ford or Poppy Bush. Proven, indicted liars who didn't have any regard for the laws while they operated secretively and knowingly without the consent of Congress or the American public while they did their very dirty bloody business. They didn't even have enough remorse to tell the truth to Congress under oath during their hearings. One of them is now in charge of tapping your phone and harvesting your electronic transaction records. On February 13, 2002, John M. Poindexter was appointed Director of the Pentagon's Information Awareness Office. Poindexter lost his job as National Security Adviser under Ronald Reagan, and was convicted of conspiracy, lying to Congress, defrauding the government, and destroying evidence in the Iran Contra scandal. The convictions were overturned in 1990, based on the fact that Congress had given him immunity in exchange for his testimony, even though the testimony he gave Congress turned out to be A LIE!

Another one is our Bush appointed Human Rights guy at the U.N. (sad). George W. Bush’s presidency has begun with a return to the Reagan-era agenda. Not the legitimate Reagan-era agenda, either. Former U.S. Ambassador to Honduras John Negroponte played a significant role in the CIA-sponsored terrorism of Hondurans during the Nicaraguan Contra War. The Bush administration officially nominated Negroponte to be U.S. Ambassador to the UN, and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearings approved him. This nomination is particularly egregious now that the international community has issued a vote of no confidence in U.S. human rights promotion by dropping our country from the UN Human Rights Commission. John Negroponte deliberately falsified State Department human rights reports throughout his time in Honduras. U.S. missionaries and many people of faith and conscience were murdered by the CIA-trained Honduran Battalion 3-16, which Negroponte at best overlooked and at worst oversaw. His nomination is an outrage, but sadly, it passed with minimal resistance or controversy.

The New York Times credits John Negroponte with "carrying out the covert strategy of the Reagan administration to crush the Sandinista government in Nicaragua" during his tenure as U.S. Ambassador to Honduras from 1981 and 1985. He oversaw the growth of military aid to Honduras from $4 million to $77.4 million a year. In early 1984, two U.S. mercenaries, Thomas Posey and Dana Parker, contacted Negroponte, stating they wanted to supply arms to the Contra army after the U.S. Congress had banned governmental add. Documents show that Negroponte connected the two with a contact in the Honduran military. The operation was exposed nine months later, at which point the Reagan administration denied any U.S. government involvement, despite Negroponte’s contact earlier that year. Other documents uncovered a scheme of Negroponte and then-Vice President George Bush to funnel Contra aid money through the Honduran government.

In addition to his work with the Nicaraguan Contra army, Negroponte helped conceal from Congress the murder, kidnapping and torture abuses of a CIA-equipped and -trained Honduran military unit, Battalion 3-16. No mention of these human rights violations ever appeared in State Department Human Rights reports for Honduras. The Baltimore Sun reports that Efrain Diaz Arrivillaga, then a delegate in the Honduran Congress and a voice of dissent, told the Sun that he complained to Negroponte on numerous occasions about the Honduran military’s human rights abuses. Rick Chidester, a junior embassy official under Negroponte, reported to the Sun that he was forced to omit an exhaustive gathering of human rights violations from his 1982 State Department report. Sister Laetitia Bordes went on a fact-finding delegation to Honduras in May 1982 to investigate the whereabouts of 32 Salvadoran nuns and women of faith who fled to Honduras in 1981 after Archbishop Oscar Romero’s assassination. Negroponte claimed the embassy knew nothing, but in 1996, Negroponte’s predecessor Jack Binns reported that the women had been captured, tortured, and then crammed into helicopters from which they were tossed to their deaths.

According to the Los Angeles Times, shortly after Negroponte’s nomination was decided, the U.S. government revoked the visa of General Luis Alonso Discua Elvir, who was Honduras’ deputy ambassador to the UN. General Discua was the commander of the Battalion during Negroponte’s tenure as ambassador. Elvir has publicly claimed to have information linking Negroponte with the battalion’s activities. His testimony would be invaluable in illuminating Negroponte’s collusion with Honduran opponents on Capitol Hill. In 1994, the Honduran Human Rights Commission charged Negroponte personally with several human rights abuses.

On August 27, 1997, CIA Inspector General Frederick P. Hitz released a 211-page classified report entitled "Selected Issues Relating to CIA Activities in Honduras in the 1980s." This report was partly declassified on October 22, 1998, in response to persistent demands by the Honduran human rights ombudsman. You can read parts of the document on the National Security Archives website. Only senators and their staff who have security clearance can read the report in its entirety. Negroponte is highly respected in diplomatic circles as "a man who speaks five languages but knows when to keep silent."

Of concern to those in the Latin American solidarity community has been Bush's unapologetic attempt to revive Cold War diplomacy through the nomination of former Iran Contra criminals to key diplomatic posts. Reagan-era Assistant Secretary of State Elliott Abrams has been selected as the National Security Council’s senior director for democracy, human rights and international operations (a post which does not require Senate approval). Some might remember that Abrams pled guilty to two misdemeanor counts of lying to Congress during the Iran Contra hearings and was subsequently pardoned by George Bush, Sr. Most of the Bush administration is comprised of former spooks, or arms manufacturing and oil executives.

The Secretary of the Army was an executive at Enron for eight years and just built a home in Florida worth over 8 mil. He's leading the charge presumably in Afghanistan and into Iraq. Bush shall inherit some of his Poppy's profits from Carlyle one day. Poppy shall make billions on the Iraq war. Cheney's old corporation Halliburton caters to the troops, constructs hospitals, airports, water and oil pipelines. Now as it did while he was CEO during the last Gulf War. Rumsfeld is worth about $137 mil. See pictures of Donald hugging buddy Saddam. (There's no evidence he personally delivered nerve gas and anthrax spores to Iraq but there's lots of evidence now that America, Germany, and some other European nations did indeed arm Saddam while he was killing his own people and waging war on Iran, against Kurds in Iraq, and planning to invade Kuwait). Abrams (another Iran-Contra spook) is in charge of U.S. Mid-East policy. Wolfowitz is Undersecretary of Defense (another felon and a zionist). If you look at Bush's candidates for chairing high-profile enquiries lately you'll discover a pattern of incompetence again, for invariably they're all patronage appointments (SEC, Treasury, 9/11, Enron). Kissinger (and Ariel Sharon too) are wanted at the Hague in Belgium for trial as war criminals. The U.S. and Somalia are about the last holdouts for signing onto the ICC.

There's definitely a pattern of denial, deceit, and outright reluctance to disclose any information about a variety of different issues that Americans are concerned about and have a right to know about. Public servants have an obligation to provide answers. This administration has Ari the Truth Stretcher Fleicher. You're told absolutely nothing, or garbage, or that it's classified information. This pattern was discernible before 9/11 and it's not about to change anytime soon. Bush has even overruled the FOIA, so there's some reasonable basis for wondering why would G.W. Bush be the first American president to seal his or former presidents' papers from public inspection? It was never a concern for other leaders. It hadn't even occurred to anyone else that these papers weren't anything else but public property except in specified instances where national security might be compromised. What's different about George? What doesn't he want disclosed about Pappy Bush's administration and Reagan's?

Arabs see a double standard by America. As my elderly friend pointed out, "Your American media covers government protests all around the world, except in your own country. America says it is about freedom but it ignores its people who are against this war. How can we as Arabs expect to be treated fairly when you do not treat your own citizens fairly? Your government calls Saddam an evil man, yet it was America who gave him the weapons of mass destruction and turned a blind eye when he killed the Kurds. Which by the way is an inaccurate statement to say that he killed his own people. The Kurds were his enemy. How many dictators has America supported over the years, despite its constant refrain of freedom and democracy?" ~ John Cory, Comes a War

Bush's 'Re-Elect' Poll Drops to 36% - That's BELOW Poppy!

Bush's "approval" rating is down to 58% in the latest Gallup Poll, but that's not the number that matters to political professionals. The important number is his "re-elect", and that stands at a dismal 36%, with 32% "definitely" voting for someone else, and 31% undecided. W's 36% puts him BELOW the 37% of the vote that Poppy got in losing to Bill Clinton in 1992 - the lowest re-election vote in 80 years. W's "re-elect" numbers are dismal, and if it was a Democrat they'd be saying he's "toast." Hey Charlie Cook, Stu Rothenberg, Bill Schneider, etc. - quit hiding Bush's dismal "re-elect" numbers! He didn't win the last time either!

Mokhiber: Ari, last week, Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld said that soldiers drafted to service in the military "added no value, no advantage, really to the United States armed services."

The Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation has called this an "egregious slur" and a "grave insult to the memory, sacrifice, and valor of those who lost their lives in Vietnam."

One Vietnam Vet, Thomas Bohan of Rochester, New York, said this: "As a draftee who spent a year of his life in Vietnam, I would like to suggest that perhaps my inferior service to our country wouldn't have been necessary if those proud, flag-waving patriots like George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and the rest of the cowards had come forward to enlist. I would like to see Secretary Rumsfeld repeat his speech in front of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Memorial Day." Does the President agree with Secretary Rumsfeld that soldiers drafted to service "added no value to the United States armed services"?

Ari Fleischer: Russell, Russell, Russell. I'm honored that you chose, in the face of the Rumsfeld briefing at the same time as mine, to come here. But I'm sure that if you took the entire text of what Secretary Rumsfeld said to Secretary Rumsfeld and asked him -- I'm sure if you looked at the entire context of what Secretary Rumsfeld said, you would have thought twice about taking any one statement. I think if you looked at everything Secretary Rumsfeld said, you would get a very, very different picture.

Mokhiber: I have a second question.

Ari Fleischer: No. (Ari moves on.)

U.S. IS BIGGEST THREAT TO PEACE

Refuting Bush's claim that Iraq is developing weapons of mass destruction, Clark noted, "Two of the highest UN officials responsible for weapons inspection within Iraq and a principle U.S. citizen participating in the inspections have resigned, denounced the sanctions and denied that there is a threat that Iraq will develop weapons of mass destruction." The real danger comes from Washington, Clark said.

"The U.S. has more nuclear weapons than all other nations combined as well as the most sophisticated and numerous systems for the delivery of nuclear weapons... It possesses the greatest stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons and the most advanced and extensive research in mass destruction weaponry in the world. Military spending by the U.S. exceeds that of the nine next largest budgets for war combined. President Bush has repeatedly declared the right to strike first.

"The U.S. has renounced treaties controlling nuclear weapons and their proliferation; voted against the protocol enabling enforcement of the Biological Weapons Conventions; and rejected the treaty banning land mines, the International Criminal Court and virtually every other international effort to control and limit war. The U.S. War Against Terrorism is a declaration of right by the U.S. to attack first - anyone, anywhere, on mere suspicion, or without excuse, unilaterally.

"If, as promised so many times, the U.S. does attack Iraq to overthrow its government, it will be the most notorious, arrogant and contemptuous violation of the Charter of the United Nations, the Nuremberg Charter and international law yet experienced, or likely hereafter," Clark wrote. "An attack on Iraq by the U.S. would also violate the Constitution and laws of the U.S. and expose President Bush to impeachment by the House of Representatives under the Constitution for the highest of crimes, those against peace and humanity, to judgment by the Senate and trial in federal court for crimes charged," he added.

Leading Nazi leader, Hermann Goering, at the Nuremberg Trials before he was sentenced to death: "Why of course the people don't want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally, the common people don't want war: neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But after all it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship ... Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger."

I looked out across
The river today
I saw a city in the fog and an old church tower
Where the seagulls play
I saw the sad shire horses walking home
In the sodium light
I saw two priests on the ferry
October geese on a cold winter's night

And all this time, the river flowed
Endlessly to the sea

Two priests came round our house tonight
One young, one old, to offer prayers for the dying
To serve the final rite
One to learn, one to teach
Which was the cold wind blows
Fussing and flapping in priestly black
Like a murder of crows

And all this time, the river flowed
Endlessly to the sea
If I had my way I'd take a boat from the river
And I'd bury the old man,
I'd bury him at sea

Blessed are the poor, for they shall inherit the earth
Better to be poor than a fat man in the eye of a needle
And as these words were spoken I swore I hear
The old man laughing
'What good is a used up world and how could it be
Worth having'

And all this time the river flowed
Endlessly like a silent tear
And all this time the river flowed
Father, if Jesus exists,
Then how come he never lived here

The teachers told us, the Romans built this place
They built a wall and a temple, an edge of the empire Garrison town,
They lived and they died, they prayed to their gods
But the stone gods did not make a sound
And their empire crumbled, 'til all that was left
Were the stones the workmen found

And all this time the river flowed
In the falling light of a northern sun
If I had my way I'd take a boat from the river
Men go crazy in congregations
But they only get better
One by one
One by one...

"Most people prefer to believe their leaders are just and fair even in the face of evidence to the contrary, because once a citizen aknowledges that the government under which they live is lying and corrupt, the citizen has to choose what he or she will do about it. To take action in the face of a corrupt government entails risks of harm to life and loved ones. To choose to do nothing is to surrender one's self-image of standing for principles. Most people do not have the courage to face that choice. Hence, most propaganda is not designed to fool the critical thinker but only to give moral cowards an excuse not to think at all." ~ Michael Rivero

"THE ENEMY IS VERY MUCH WITHIN"

TIME Magazine Poll reveals that 71 percent As of 16 Jan 2003, the poll is now up to 81.8 percent! believe that the U.S. is the greatest threat to world peace. The mere presence of this poll on a TIME Magazine website suggests that the bush administration may be falling out of favor. We have managed to save a copy of the TIME results which may soon disappear. And while you’re at it, cast a vote yourself!

For a couple weeks now, TPM has been pressing the question: what did the Bush administration know about the North Korean uranium enrichment program and when did they know it? Obviously, TPM's reporting resources are nothing compared to those of Seymour Hersh and The New Yorker. Now he's got the goods. And it's not pretty. - TPM

"Last June, four months before the current crisis over North Korea became public, the Central Intelligence Agency delivered a comprehensive analysis of North Korea's nuclear ambitions to President Bush and his top advisers. The document, known as a National Intelligence Estimate, was classified as Top Secret S.C.I. (for "sensitive compartmented information"), and its distribution within the government was tightly restricted. The C.I.A. report made the case that North Korea had been violating international law—and agreements with South Korea and the United States—by secretly obtaining the means to produce weapons-grade uranium.

The document's most politically sensitive information, however, was about Pakistan. Since 1997, the C.I.A. said, Pakistan had been sharing sophisticated technology, warhead-design information, and weapons-testing data with the Pyongyang regime. Pakistan, one of the Bush Administration's important allies in the war against terrorism, was helping North Korea build the bomb."

U.S. Protects Al-Q'aeda Terrorists in Kosovo by Umberto Pascali, Executive Intelligence Review

While the United States was relentlessly bombing Afghanistan with the official aim of 'getting Osama bin Laden', "one of bin Laden's top collaborators is running a terrorist training camp in an area of Kosovo that is {under U.S. control.} The shocking revelation has been confirmed by multiple sources: Macedonian intelligence agencies, as reported by several Macedonian media, including the leading daily Dnevnik; Russian press agencies, including Novosti and ItarTass; and the London Independent. This intelligence coheres with Lyndon LaRouche's assessment of the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States, as a strategic covert operation by an enemy {within} the U.S. and "allied" security services, for geopolitical purposes.

The Russian media quoted, as the source of their detailed revelation, the Russian troops stationed not far from the reported terrorist training camp. This is in itself exceptional, in the sense that there is hardly a precedent of the Russian military in Kosovo reporting events of such gravity to the leading news agencies. These revelations, and the clear position taken by Macedonian intelligence in confirming and expanding them, are now reopening the explosive question of the protection and sponsorship granted to the narco-terrorists by Anglo-American agencies. But this is only a small part of the new strategic geometry opened up by the revelations. The red-hot political point concerns the very basis for the "war against terrorism" launched after the war-like attacks of Sept. 11, and the immediate concentration on bin Laden and Afghanistan as the perpetrators of those attacks - and the threatened extension of the "infinite war" to Syria, Iraq, and so on. If the Anglo-Americans are at "war" with bin Laden's terrorism, why are bin Laden operatives active in Kosovo in an area totally controlled by NATO? Furthermore, why are they active in the U.S. zone in Kosovo? Investigations on the bin Laden connection into the Balkans and Kosovo could, according to experts, lead to even more explosive truths in a very short period of time."

Keep The Clash Going

On Oct. 16 Novosti reported: "A training camp of Albanian militants functions near the village of Ropotovo, close to Kosovska Kamenica, in the Yugoslav province of Kosovo, which is controlled by the American force, sources from the Russian peacekeeping force in Kosovo reported on [Oct. 16]. According to [the sources], the camp is now training 50 Afghan and Algerian mujahideen, led by Zaiman Zawahiri. He is reportedly the brother of one of the closest associates of international terrorist Osama bin Laden. This camp prepares militants for terrorist formations in Kosovo and Macedonia. Their `instructors' are former [ethnic] Albanian officers who, in 1991-92, deserted from the Yugoslav Army." The {Independent} reported on Oct. 21 that Interpol has linked bin Laden to Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) crime gangs, and that he "supplied one of his top military commanders for an elite KLA unit" in Kosovo. That was only the beginning. The target of the terrorist gangs' deployment into Macedonia: to prevent, by violence, the return of Macedonian refugees into the villages "cleansed" by the KLA during this year; and to take over the water reserve on which the Macedonian capital, Skopje, depends.

Beyond that, these extremists are out to re-ignite the ethnic "Clash of Civilizations" in the Balkans, to crush the escalating resistance of Macedonia - which has been actively playing the LaRouche card in response to its national crisis (see {EIR,} Oct. 19) - and to continue the march of destruction, possibly triggering in the near future, an ethnic upheaval in Greece or Bulgaria.

The fact that such an operation is taking place in the middle of the "war on the Taliban and al-Qaeda" - the fact that NATO's Lord George Robertson, U.S. Ambassador James Pardew, and the European Union's Javier Solana insist, to this very day, that Macedonia has to surrender to the KLA ultimata, including the subversion of the Macedonian Constitution, opens up a dramatic contradiction. That contradiction throws light on the virtual reality the world has been propelled into after the Sept. 11 attacks.

Who Runs Al-Zawahiri?

The Macedonian daily {Dnevnik} reported on Oct. 19 that the group led by the brother of Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri, the closest associate of bin Laden, had crossed the border from Kosovo into Macedonia. Quoting intelligence sources, {Dnevnik} wrote: "The younger brother of the chief of the Balkan headquarters of al-Qaeda, Ayman al-Zawahiri, with around 50 mujahideen, has entered Macedonia and has started building fortifications in the Skopska Crna Gora region. The aim of the terrorist group is to attack the water supply" for Skopje.

The newspaper reported that the gang had been stationed earlier in the training camp near the village of Ropotovo, Kosovo - as Novosti also reported - and received orders to enter the Macedonian town of Matejce. On Oct. 16, a convoy of refugees, who were previously expelled by the KLA, were supposed to visit their destroyed houses. However, the observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe entered the village first, and reported that at least 50 armed men had communicated they were going to fire on the convoy if they dared to enter Matejce. The OSCE order to the heartbroken refugees was: Go back, we cannot guarantee your security!

But who is Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri, whose brother Zaiman is running terrorist camps under NATO protection in the U.S. zone in Kosovo? As the London {Guardian} wrote recently, "Even to say he is bin Laden's right-hand man may understate his importance." He is considered by many to be the real head of what is known as the bin Laden group. "Some analysts believe that in his current role in Afghanistan, al-Zawahiri has taken over control of much of bin Laden's terrorist finances, operations, plans, and resources," wrote the {Guardian}.

His known terrorist career started no later than 1981, with his involvement in the assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat; it includes the massacre of 70 people on a tourist bus in 1997 at Luxor, Egypt, and the assassination attempt against Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in 1995. Strangely enough, according to January 2000 U.S. Congressional testimony, al-Zawahiri was granted U.S. residence by the Immigration and Naturalization Service - something almost impossible for many legitimate immigrants to obtain. Should we be surprised that one of the centers of operation for al-Zawahiri was London, where one of his closest relatives resided? President Mubarak is believed to have referred to him when, after the Luxor massacre, he stated: "There are people who carried out crimes and who were sentenced [in Egypt] and live on British soil."

On the American Holiday Celebrating the Birth and Work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

From Stride Toward Freedom, by Martin Luther King, Jr, 1958:

"Every crisis has both its dangers and opportunities. It can spell either salvation or doom. In the present crisis American can achieve either racial justice or the ultimate social psychosis that can only lead to domestic suicide. The democratic ideal of freedom and equality will be fulfilled for all - or all human being will share in the resulting social and spiritual doom. In short, this crisis has the potential for democracy's fulfillment or fascism's triumph; for social progress or retrogression. We can choose either to walk the high road of human brotherhood or tread the low road of man's inhumanity to man."

"What I experienced in that courtroom ranged from inspiration at the courage of the Kings, their lawyer-investigator William F. Pepper, and the witnesses, to amazement at the government’s carefully interwoven plot to kill Dr. King. The seriousness with which U.S. intelligence agencies planned the murder of Martin Luther King Jr. speaks eloquently of the threat Kingian nonviolence represented to the powers that be in the spring of 1968."

Oh my name it is nothin' My age it means less
The country I come from Is called the Midwest
I's taught and brought up there The laws to abide
And that land that I live in Has God on its side.

Oh the history books tell it They tell it so well
The cavalries charged The Indians fell
The cavalries charged The Indians died
Oh the country was young With God on its side.

Oh the Spanish-American War had its day
And the Civil War too Was soon laid away
And the names of the heroes I's made to memorize
With guns in their hands And God on their side.

Oh the First World War, boys It closed out its fate
The reason for fighting I never got straight
But I learned to accept it Accept it with pride
For you don't count the dead When God's on your side.

When the Second World War Came to an end
We forgave the Germans And we were friends
Though they murdered six million In the ovens they fried
The Germans now too Have God on their side.

I've learned to hate Russians All through my whole life
If another war starts It's them we must fight
To hate them and fear them To run and to hide
And accept it all bravely With God on my side.

But now we got weapons Of the chemical dust
If fire them we're forced to Then fire them we must
One push of the button And a shot the world wide
And you never ask questions When God's on your side.

In a many dark hour I've been thinkin' about this
That Jesus Christ Was betrayed by a kiss
But I can't think for you You'll have to decide
Whether Judas Iscariot Had God on his side.

So now as I'm leavin' I'm weary as Hell
The confusion I'm feelin' Ain't no tongue can tell
The words fill my head And fall to the floor
If God's on our side He'll stop the next war.
WITH GOD ON OUR SIDE, by Bob Dylan

PROTESTS ORGANIZED NATIONWIDE THIS WEEKEND

She says my ass hurts
When I sit down
She says my feet hurt
When I'm standing around
I think my body
is as restless as my mind
and I don't know if I can
Roll with it this time

she packed his uniforms
and drove him to the base
she was crying all the way
the world looked her in the face

and said, roll with it baby
make it your career
keep the home fires burning
till america is in the clear

the mainstream
is so polluted with lies
once you are wet
it's so hard to get dry

we are all taught how to justify
history as it passes by
and yes, it's your world
that comes crashing down

when the big boys
want to throw their weight around
but just roll with it baby
make it your career
keep the home fires burning
till america is in the clear

but what if the enemy
isn't in a distant land
what if the enemy lies behind
the voice of command
the sound of war
is a childs cry
behind tinted windows
they just drive by

and all I know is that those
that are going to be killed
aren't those that preside
on capital hill
I told him don't fill
the front lines of their war
those assholes aren't worth dying for

but he said roll with it baby
make it your career
keep the home fires burning
till america is in the clear

she says my ass hurts
when I sit down
she says my feet hurt
when I'm standing around
I think my body
is as restless as my mind
and I'm not gonna roll with it this time

MORE THAN SEVENTY PERCENT OF GERMANS OPPOSE WAR AGAINST IRAQ!

Back when Eisenhower was the President,
Golf courses was where most of his time was spent.
So I never really listened to what the President said,
Because in general I believed that the General was politically dead.

But he always seemed to know when the muscles were about to be flexed,
Because I remember him saying something, mumbling something about a Military Industrial Complex.
Americans no longer fight to keep their shores safe,
Just to keep the jobs going in the arms making workplace.
Then they pretend to be gripped by some sort of political reflex,
But all they're doing is paying dues to the Military Industrial Complex.

The Military and the Monetary,
The Military and the Monetary,
The Military and the Monetary.
The Military and the Monetary,
get together whenever they think its necessary,

They turn our brothers and sisters into mercenaries, they are turning the planet into a cemetery.
The Military and the Monetary, use the media as intermediaries,
they are determined to keep the citizens secondary, they make so many decisions that are arbitrary.

We're marching behind a commander in chief,
who is standing under a spotlight shaking like a leaf.
but the ship of state had landed on an economic reef,
so we knew he was going to bring us messages of grief.

The Military and the Monetary,
were shielded by January and went storming into February,
Brought us pot bellied generals as luminaries,
two weeks ago I hadn't heard of the son of a bitch,
now all of a sudden he's legendary.

They took the honour from the honourary,
they took the dignity from the dignitaries,
they took the secrets from the secretary,
but they left the bitch an obituary.

The Military and the Monetary,
from thousands of miles away in a Saudi Arabian sanctuary,
had us all scrambling for our dictionaries,
cause we couldn't understand the fuckin vocabulary.

Yeah, there was some smart bombs,
but there was some dumb ones as well,
scared the hell out of CNN in that Baghdad hotel.

The Military and the Monetary,
they get together whenever they think its necessary,
War in the desert sometimes sure is scary,
but they beamed out the war to all their subsidiaries.
Tried to make So Damn Insane a worthy adversary,
keeping the citizens secondary,
scaring old folks into coronaries.

The Military and the Monetary,
from thousands of miles in a Saudi Arabian sanctuary,
kept us all wondering if all of this was really truely, necessary.

We've got to work for Peace,
Peace ain't coming this way.
If we only work for Peace,
If everyone believed in Peace the way they say they do,
we'd have Peace.

The only thing wrong with Peace,
is that you can't make no money from it.

The Military and the Monetary,
they get together whenever they think its necessary,
they've turned our brothers and sisters into mercenaries,
they are turning the planet, into a cemetery.

Got to work for Peace,
Peace ain't coming this way.

We should not allow ourselves to be mislead,
by talk of entering a time of Peace,
Peace is not the absence of war,
it is the absence of the rules of war and the threats of war and the preparation for war.
Peace is not the absence of war,
it is the time when we will all bring ourselves closer to each other,
closer to building a structure that is unique within ourselves
because we have finally come to Peace within ourselves.

The Military and the Monetary,
The Military and the Monetary,
The Military and the Monetary.
Get together whenever they think its necessary,
they've turned our brothers and sisters into mercenaries,
they are turning parts of the planet, into a cemetery.

The Military and the Monetary,
The Military and the Monetary,
We hounded the Ayatollah religiously,
Bombed Libya and killed Quadafi's son hideously.
We turned our back on our allies the Panamanians,
and saw Ollie North selling guns to the Iranians.
Watched Gorbachev slaughtering Lithuanians,
We better warn the Amish,
they may bomb the Pennsylvanians.

The Military and the Monetary,
get together whenever they think its necessary,
they have turned our brothers and sisters into mercenaries,
they are turning the planet, into a cemetery.

I don't want to sound like no late night commercial,
but its a matter of fact that there are thousands of children all over the world
in Asia and Africa and in South America who need our help.

When they start talking about 55 cents a day and 70 cents a day,
I know a lot of folks feel as though that,
thats not really any kind of contribution to make,
but we had to give up a dollar and a half just to get in the subway nowadays.

So this is a song about tommorrow and about how tommorrow can be better. if we all,
"Each one reach one, Each one try to teach one".

Nobody can do everything,
but everybody can do something,
everyone must play a part,
everyone got to go to work, Work for Peace.

Spirit Say Work, Work for Peace
If you believe the things you say, go to work.
If you believe in Peace, time to go to work.
Cant be wavin your head no more, go to work.
- WORK FOR PEACE, Gil Scott Heron

INTERNATIONAL ANSWER: UPCOMING DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST WAR WITH IRAQ

TENS OF THOUSANDS PROTEST WAR WITH IRAQ IN D.C.!!!

To commemorate this occasion of anti-war demonstrations growing to unprecedented scale, this section shall report about various anti-war protests, and provide some appropriate song lyrics dedicated to the cause. "Strength and honor!"

My name is Francis Tolliver, I come from Liverpool.

Two years ago the war was waiting for me after school.

To Belgium and to Flanders, to Germany to here.

I fought for King and country I love dear.

'Twas Christmas in the trenches where the frost so bitter hung.

The frozen fields of France were still, no Christmas song was sung.

Our families back in England were toasting us that day

Their brave and glorious lads so far away.

I was lying with my messmate on the cold and rocky ground

When across the lines of battle came a most peculiar sound

Says I, "Now listen up, me boys!" each soldier strained to hear

As one young German voice rang out so clear.

"He's singing bloody well, you know!" my partner says to me.

Soon one by one, each German voice joined in harmony.

The cannons rested silent, the gas clouds rolled no more

As Christmas brought us respite from the war.

As soon as they were finished and a reverent pause was spent,

"God rest ye Merry Gentlemen" struck up some lads from Kent.

The next they sang was "Stille Nacht" "'Tis Silent Night," says I

And in two tongues one song filled up that sky.

"There's someone coming toward us!" the front line sentry cried

All sights were fixed on one lone figure trudging from their side

His truce flag, like a Christmas star, shown on that plain so bright

As he bravely strode unarmed into the night.

Soon one by one on either side walked into No Man's Land

With neither gun nor bayonet we met there hand to hand.

We shared some secret brandy and we wished each other well

And in a flare-lit soccer game we gave 'em hell.

We traded chocolates, cigarettes, and photographs from home.

These sons and fathers far away from families of their own

Young Sanders played his squeezebox and they had a violin

This curious and unlikely band of men.

Soon daylight stole upon us and France was France once more.

With sad farewells we each prepared to settle back to war.

But the question haunted every heart that lived that wondrous night--

"Whose family have I fixed within my sights?"

'Twas Christmas in the trenches where the frost so bitter hung.

The frozen fields of France were warmed as songs of peace were sung.

For the walls they'd kept between us to exact the work of war

Had been crumbled and were gone forevermore.

My name is Francis Tolliver, in Liverpool I dwell

Each Christmas come since World War I I've learned its lessons well.

My name is Francis Tolliver, in Liverpool I dwell

Each Christmas come since World War I I've learned its lessons well.

That the ones who call the shots won't be among the dead and lame,

And on each end of the rifle we're the same.

Christmas in the Trenches

John McCutheon (Appalsong, ASCAP)

Now when I was a young man I carried me pack
And I lived the free life of the rover.
From the Murray's green basin to the dusty outback,
Well, I waltzed my Matilda all over.

Then in 1915, my country said, "Son,
It's time you stop ramblin', there's work to be done."
So they gave me a tin hat, and they gave me a gun,
And they marched me away to the war.
And the band played "Waltzing Matilda,"
As the ship pulled away from the quay,
And amidst all the cheers, the flag waving, and tears,
We sailed off for Gallipoli.

And how well I remember that terrible day,
How our blood stained the sand and the water;
And of how in that hell that they call Suvla Bay
We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter.
Johnny Turk, he was waitin', he primed himself well;
He showered us with bullets, and he rained us with shell --
And in five minutes flat, he'd blown us all to hell,
Nearly blew us right back to Australia.
But the band played "Waltzing Matilda,"
When we stopped to bury our slain,
Well, we buried ours, and the Turks buried theirs,
Then we started all over again.

And those that were left, well, we tried to survive
In that mad world of blood, death and fire.
And for ten weary weeks I kept myself alive
Though around me the corpses piled higher.
Then a big Turkish shell knocked me arse over head,
And when I woke up in me hospital bed
And saw what it had done, well, I wished I was dead -
Never knew there was worse things than dying.
For I'll go no more "Waltzing Matilda,"
All around the green bush far and free -
To hump tents and pegs, a man needs both legs,
No more "Waltzing Matilda" for me.

So they gathered the crippled, the wounded, the maimed,
And they shipped us back home to Australia.
The armless, the legless, the blind, the insane,
Those proud wounded heroes of Suvla.
And as our ship sailed into Circular Quay,
I looked at the place where me legs used to be,
And thanked Christ there was nobody waiting for me,
To grieve, to mourn and to pity.
But the band played "Waltzing Matilda,"
As they carried us down the gangway,
But nobody cheered, they just stood and stared,
Then they turned all their faces away.

And so now every April, I sit on my porch
And I watch the parade pass before me.
And I see my old comrades, how proudly they march,
Reviving old dreams of past glory,
And the old men march slowly, all bones stiff and sore,
They're tired old heroes from a forgotten war
And the young people ask "What are they marching for?"
And I ask meself the same question.
But the band plays "Waltzing Matilda,"
And the old men still answer the call,
But as year follows year, more old men disappear
Someday, no one will march there at all.

Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda.
Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?
And their ghosts may be heard as they march by the billabong,
Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me?
